    Question:
How long until personal drones become an everyday technology?

    Answer:
The question could be broken down into a couple parts. Drones will likely do some real work in the fields of medicine and rescue, within 3-5 years (2016-2018). The first uses will probably be in underdeveloped countries for a number of reasons, most of them having to do with lack of roads and infrastructure in those places.

R&D in the field of drones is advancing at a very rapid pace and most of the current technologies have only become ripe in the last 2-3 years. Given that the doubling of knowledge tends to speed up as it goes along the timeline, we can only guess what is going to happen within the next 10-15 years.

It is likely that some of the uses will be in fields that you may have a harder time guessing off-the-cuff. Fire and Rescue is likely to be a BIG one - imagine releasing a swarm of human sensing inexpensive (in case you lose 'em) drones inside a large factory or warehouse fire! Or, when a building collapses they could sniff out large areas of it much quicker than the search and rescue teams.

Uses for building, crop and other inspection(s) and mapping are likely to become commonplace within the next 2-5 years. (update - all these things are underway as of 2018)
