    Hi,

I am ordering a CX 20 drone from hobbyking website and the product name there is Quanum nova. I need to know what are the exact requirements to be validated for having waypoint flying features on this drone. how to check for it? i am ordering a go pro camera with gimbal as well. thanks.

I am fairly certain that all of the HK models would have that feature - as they mention clearly that they use APM. They say in their product information:
"*Note: The Quanum Nova flight controller is based on the open source APM Project from 3D Robotics, the design files per the creative commons license are available under the files tab below."

Here is a fella that tested it out. Note that he added a datalink - I think you may need something like that unless you only want to program it from a laptop directly plugged into it.

Here is the mission planner which you use to create waypoints:

Note - don't assume this type of setup is easy for those without a lot of technical ability and understanding of all the various parts involved.

Thanks webman. Let me have a look at these pointers and I may need more or pin-point information around this subject. And yes, you are right, someone needs to have proper technical background to accomplish this. Appreciated!

Well thanks IceFyre for the generous offer. Infact, being a newbie in this field, I would like to proceed step by step. The reason I post this note is to ensure that I don't need to order anything else for now (except software download) along with my CX 20 quad. I am ordering a GoPro cam with gimbal as well for filming. Apart from that, what I understand is that:

    1. First, I need to update the APM firmware on the ardupilot (inside quad).
    2. After that, the mission planner software will help me to map the aerial path for the drone.
    3. On the third step, I am not sure what is the meaning of data link and how I can do it without adding a new piece of hardware to the quad?!

The last step, can be parked for now as there is still some time to get the whole gadget on ground from warehouse ;)

Please don't stop your suggestions and advises coming through. thanks a lot.

My guess is that the data link only applies if you don't want to plan your missions on a laptop and connect with a USB cable. That is, the datalink is probably bluetooth and can pair with an android tablet....

If you are OK using a laptop out in the field and have the downloaded google maps already on it, then I think you are OK without the datalink - just with the USB cable.

ICE may be able to confirm what I am saying.

Data Link does a couple of things, it allows a tablet / phone to do your planning and setup (just like a laptop would)......it also allows telemetry to be sent to the tablet / phone while in flight.

Its easy to use a tablet and attach it to your transmitter so you can glance down at the screen and see battery life and other information from the UAS.........with a little extra work you can see video feed from the camera as well.

A third thing that the data link can do, it can be your transmitter......there is a "joy stick" overlay in the apps that allow you to fly the UAS with the phone as well (it is still recommended to have a regular transmitter on hand to fly in case of lost signal with the data link).

@IceFyre what if I would like to have a separate LCD screen connected with GoPro cam wirelessly and mounted on my radio transmitter? Can I order something like this separately? I think for a phone or tablet to do all mentioned things in your post, I need to be super advance expert on everything.

Yes you can, any of the FatShark, Eagle Tree, LawMate, ImmersionRC.....etc equipment can do that for you.

    See places like:

    http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__543__172__telemetry_fpv-fpv.html

    There are more.

Just remember this, if your RC Tx/Rx is 2.4 Ghz do not use that frequency for your Video Tx/Rx.......every Tx/Rx system must be on there own frequency otherwise you run into lots of problems.

Always test each component separately, then add one at a time and test again to ensure you not getting any issues (not flying).

My big birds have up to 5 different Tx/Rx combinations depending upon mission use, even frequencies that are far away from each other can sometimes disrupt one of the other systems. So testing compatibility is a must before flight,
