Hey, I'm hoping someone here may be able to offer some insight about licensing footage I shot on a drone to 3rd party websites. I'm based in the UK so am operating within the CAA rules on flying drones and am aware that without a commercial license I cannot use my drone to record footage for any commercial purposes. However, I've recently been asked by a news website if they can have permission to use some of the footage that I've shot. I'm happy to let them use the footage and not charge but if I do so would with I or them be in breach of the rules? I've looked for similar cases and all I can determine is that it's a very grey area so any more facts on the matter would be much appreciated!
Hmm....I can say this much. It was done around here for a big storm that hit the local mountain and the drone footage was on national news and the local guy had no problems. I think it would be fine......although am speaking more to US than UK. I think the reason for the non-commercial use is so that we are all not tempted to be flying our drones in all places (right and wrong) chasing revenue and the next best shot. What you are doing is no different than vast amounts of youtube videos (drone and non-drone) which are on the news.
