I got a small quadrone for Christmass last year. Its fun to fly however its not very stable and requires lots of fancy thumb work to keep it from crashing. And i know it didnt cost very much. $45 to $55 maybe. So my question is, how hard are the bigger drones to fly? I am thinking its like most things and just depends on how much you spend on them.....right!?!?

Here is the good news. You are learning much more about control than if you purchased a better model right away. So if you eventually step up, it's likely that you will find the model easy to control.

Drones with sensors, especially GPS, Compass and Barometers, tend to hold position well when you let go of the sticks. You can even say "look - no hands!) -

Yes, the fancier drones will cost more. You can get inexpensive GPS drones on sale for as low as $300, but in general I'd suggest the Phantom 3 Standard as a good beginner camera drone with GPS and other sensors.

If you don't care much about the video and pictures you can look at low-end Hubsan Quads models with GOP - maybe as low as $200 or less but no stabilized video.

    Good luck!

Thank you very much for the info. I am thinking about upgrading to something bigger and i figured that the more you spent on one the better it would be. Now just how big of a drone can I get before i am required to get a license? The one i have now only weighs 3.5oz.

No license required for now in the USA - if you live somewhere else you may need one.

There was a .55 lb limit but the courts just struck it down. Most GPS drones will weigh more than that old limit.

I thought there was something you had to pass in order to legally fly a drone? Or did i miss understand?

Only to fly and charge money. As a hobbyist you don't need anything.

Thought there was something about the FAA for UAS's? OR!! was it you have to register your drone with the FAA?

Some folks like actually flying their machines.

No auto stabilization, no gimbal, no GPS, no altitude hold, just a damn good pilot.
