So, I just came across that you need to have a HAM Radio license to do FPV because of the video transmitter. How many people do this ? I have no problems taking a $15 dollar test and doing some reading on HAM radios and such but is this correct that you need this?
I am not so sure about that as you are not broadcasting the video out but receiving video from your UAS
It's a long story - but if you have FCC approval on the FPV stuff, I don't think you need the license. Example: http://www.dpcav.com/xcart/5.8GHz-Cased-Audio-Video-Transmitter-FCC-Compliant-FatShark.html See the "FCC Compliant" - I think that makes it OK. I had an advanced class HAM license but I let it lapse and I am too lazy to take the test again! Luckily I do very little FPV flying as of now.
That's because that one is an extremely low power unit and supposedly has been tested/registered with the FCC. We never see anyone using such low power, 200mW to 600mW is what most use in the US and you'll never see a real FCC label on them.
