Got a few newbie questions - sorry in advance

  1. Hi Everyone,

I glanced around on the forum and couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. I'm an avid kayak fisherman...we catch everything from bass, to trophy sized catfish (40 pounds plus) to very large gator gar (100 pounds plus) from our kayak. We have a Youtube channel, Facebook Page, and sponsors. What we dont have is a drone.

I need a self guided waterproof drone at a reasonable price (subjective, I know). I've flown RC planes before, and loved it, but its very hard to fly a drone and fish at the same time. I LOVE the Lily Drone, and would buy one tomorrow if I had the cash in hand.

So, knowing what you know about what I need, would you suggest saving for the Lily drone, or is there another one on the market that would work?

I'd say there is really nothing which will work at this point.
Lilly and many others of these are a dream.....they likely will never exist in the form you see in the "fake" videos they show you.

What you may want to do is start getting familiar with drones in general - read and maybe buy a toy or two to get some idea.

My guess is 1-2 years (at the best) for something even partially being what you are looking for (even then, likely not waterproof - but maybe fairly perfected self-guided with some AI and obstacle avoidance, etc.).

  3. Thanks for the quick response. Just curious, what makes you say that Lily is a dream...wont exist in the form we see, and the videos are fake. From the stand point of someone who admittedly knows nothing about drones, the videos seem pretty real to me.

The reason is because it's a lot easier to make CGI videos than to engineer a complex aircraft. Up to date it's safe to say that not a single crowdsourced or pre-order drone (out of MANY - and probably 20 million dollars) has delivered anything even moderately groundbreaking. In fact, many have not - and will not - deliver at all.

These ads and videos are meant to do exactly what they are doing to you - make you want one and perhaps put the money up front.

The simplest way you can make sure you get something that meets your needs is to follow a basic piece of advice - wait 3-6 months after the full release of any model to even consider it. This way you will be able to read enough experiences and reviews to see if a model will suit you.

As of right now I don't think any of these models are mature enough to do the job. Keep an eye on Airdog - they may actually come out with something soon, but again you should wait a number of months after any release.

Here is another video. Do these look real?

  5. That one doesnt look real, but the lilly drone videos do.

You asked the question and I answered to the best of my ability.

If you think the Lilly will do the job my suggestion is to wait until they ship - and add another 90-120 days and then find some unbiased reviews.

Most of the claims of these (crowdsourced drones) have not panned out. Certainly it is possible that one will sooner or later. But don't be fooled by videos and claims.
