Now the the excitement of the initial introduction has passed, it’s time to take a look at the new DJI Phantom 3 (P3) “camera drones” from DJI and see what the actual improvements are over the former Phantom 2 Vision+. Without further ado, here are the major improvements of the P3:
Note – differences are given in the order of importance – in our humble opinion! This article should be accurate as of May, 2015.
Improvement #1 – Price/Performance/Value
The multirotor community was pleased to see the low pricing of the new Phantom 3 series. Rumors had indicated the new quads would have more features – but at a higher price ($1500+). Instead, the price was actually lowered as compared to the Phantom 2 Vision+. As an example, the new DJI Phantom 3 Advanced features all the improved systems listed below and yet sells for about $250-$300 (street price) less than the older model. As a reminder, the prices are as follows:
$999 – Phantom 3 Advanced with Remote and single battery (DJI Link – Amazon Link)
$1259 – Phantom 3 Professional (4K camera) with Remote and single battery (DJI Link – Amazon Link)
Extra batteries are $100 when bought with the package (see links above) – and probably $110-$130 when purchased separately.
We rate the “more for less” as the top new benefit of the P3.
Improvement #2 – Camera Improvements
DJI has taken many of the updates introduced in their $3,000 Inspire 1 camera and brought them into the Phantom line. This includes:
A. A larger sensor (better quality) and 4K availability (Pro model only).
B. An improved lens with additional elements and much less fish-eye (rectilinear lens).
These birds feature a camera which is “purpose designed” for flight and therefore provides superior images and video to most add-on models anywhere near the same price range.
We rate the camera as one of the top new benefits of the P3 over it’s predecessor – that said, the Phantom 2 Vison+ camera and images are more than adequate for most hobby aerial photography and video.
Improvement(s) #3 (tie!)- Lightbridge (FPV) and DJI Pilot App
Although these are two distinct systems, we’ve bundled them together since they are both part of the pilot/drone interface. Lightbridge is the brand name that DJI gives to its advanced digital FPV and Communication system. This system alone sells for $1400 – yet it’s included with both new Phantom models. Lightbridge means longer range, less latency (lag) and higher resolution pictures on your choice of monitor (smartphone or tablet). The DJI Pilot app which runs on your smart device has been upgraded and expanded. The result is a more refined pilot experience as well as easier access to upgrades.
Improvement #4 – Dual GPS Systems onboard
The Phantom 3 makes use of both the USA GPA and the Russian GLONASS global positioning satellites. The two systems combine to make the Phantom 3 completely aware of its location and relation to you. It hovers more precisely, moves more accurately, and locks onto satellites faster. This means less chance of malfunctions, crashes and “flyaways” related to GPS failure. The improved GPS systems are integrated into the new Pilot app, providing an improved and safer experience.
Improvement #5 – optical flow and ultrasonic sensors
The Phantom 3 features new bottom sensors which help stabilize the quadcopter when it’s close to the ground. This can assist with indoor flight as well as when GPS signals are weak. Please note that such systems are not perfected and your results may depend on what type of surface you are flying over. In general, these systems work when your Phantom is within 25 feet of the ground.
Improvement #6 – Improved remote (R/C TX) with dedicated buttons
The DJI Remote has been completely revamped in order to take full advantages of the above improvements. The new TX is easily recognized by the two antennas for the Lightbridge feature. It also features various dedicated buttons (one for Return to Home!).
In addition to the major improvements listed above, the following are to be noted – we classify them as differences rather than major improvements.
2. Active Braking – the Motors are now capable of active braking similar to that of the Inspire 1 (DJI’s higher end model). This means better control and smoother flight.
3. The landing legs are slightly wider and deeper – perhaps making those tip-overs less likely. The total weight of the Phantom 3 is approx. the same as the Phantom 2 (<1300 grams) and the size is very close. Many of the same accessories for the Phantom 2 will also work on the P#, but make sure you check with your vendor or other DJI pilots to confirm fit.
4. The advanced model comes with a 57 watt battery charger while the Pro version features 100 watts. The larger charger will fill up your batteries quicker!
Availability – As you can see by this photo, the Phantom 3 quadcopters are in production and should start shipping to dealers and customers in May, 2015. Extra batteries are reportedly slightly delayed so new owners may have to get by for a couple weeks with the included single battery.
Summary
The Phantom 2 Vision+ was the most advanced hobby-grade RTF Camera drone when it was announced in April, 2014 – and it remained at the top of the pack until now. The new Phantom 3 builds on this success by integrating technology passed down from more expensive multirotors. With this new release, DJI remains at the top of the pack and proves they have the R&D and production chops to move this pursuit forward.
