External, human-made systems are defined in DroneSpeak as:
- human-made systems that may interact with, or affect the intended behavior of components of a UAS.
An example is the Global Positioning System (GPS), which is an example of a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) that transmits signals to assist in programming and guidance of civilian drones between waypoints in air space. The accuracy, reliability, and availability of GNSS-transmitted data may be improved with a satellite-based augmentation system, or a ground-based augmentation system.
An alternative is a local, short-range positioning system that is established for research purposes or special applications of civilian drones.
Other external, human-made systems may intentionally or unintentionally influence the behavior of a drone or its management system. For example, high-power RF transmissions from antenna towers have been reported to disrupt drone flight. Government-maintained systems may be used to prevent intrusions of civilian drones into sensitive air, ground or water spaces. Civilians may be offered devices that are claimed to interfere with, or “jam” the sensing or transmission capabilities of a drone.
